The PAX 4 is the biggest upgrade in years from PAX Labs, the brand whose slim aluminium portables have shaped the pocket vaporizer for nearly two decades. It suits owners of earlier PAX models ready to upgrade, design-conscious carriers, and anyone switching from smoking who wants one button and no learning curve.

The PAX 4 puts simplicity ahead of precision. It offers four presets with no app, and it heats in roughly a minute, so it fits planned sessions better than instant single draws. Where it shines is everyday carry: it slips flush into a jeans pocket, looks like a small gadget, and runs a quiet, flavourful session anywhere.

The PAX 4 keeps the shape that made PAX famous: a slim block of matte anodised aluminium, 11 cm tall and 125 g. The flat mouthpiece sits flush with the top, so nothing catches on fabric when it slides into a pocket.

A raised mouthpiece also comes in the box for a more natural lip feel during longer sessions. Both snap on and off in a moment for cleaning.

The shell warms noticeably near the oven during longer high-heat sessions. If the surface gets too warm, the vape shuts down briefly and resumes once it cools.

A silicone cover (sold separately) adds grip and drop protection, and keeps that warmth away from your hand.

Every earlier core-line PAX heated by conduction alone, with hot chamber walls baking the herbs. The PAX 4 adds convection on top. Hot air enters through redesigned gaps around the oven lid and flows through the load while the steel walls heat it directly, like cooking with an oven and a pan at once.

The result is noticeably more even extraction. Used herbs come out evenly brown with far fewer green spots, and the flavour holds deeper into the session. By PAX's own measurements, the new heater pulls up to 50% more from each load than any earlier PAX.

The airflow is also much improved over previous models. The old slow-draw technique is gone; draws flow freely and back-to-back inhalations work well. The draw stays controlled by design, built for slow, steady inhalations.

The PAX 4 runs on four presets: 190°C, 200°C, 210°C and 220°C, shown by the colour of the four petal lights. A single click of the button in the mouthpiece cycles through them, and a vibration signals when the oven is ready, roughly a minute after switching on.

The lower presets preserve lighter compounds and terpenes, while the higher ones extract more material in fewer draws. Many owners start on the second or third petal and step up as the flavour fades.

There is no app and no Bluetooth; PAX removed them on purpose. Smart sensors handle the rest: the vape senses your lips and motion, so it keeps heat active while you draw and pauses when set down. The vibration signals also make it easy to use without looking.

The stainless steel oven sits at the bottom and holds up to 0.3 g of ground herbs. Its funnel-shaped opening guides herbs straight in, and the lid pulls off using two side notches. The easier lid is a real help for anyone with arthritis or limited hand mobility.

The hybrid heater works best with a light touch. Fill the oven and tamp gently, keeping the load loose enough for air to pass through. A half-pack lid comes in the box for smaller loads.

The PAX 4 works with dry herbs only. No concentrate insert exists for it, and dosing capsules do not fit.

You can add a puck press to shape ground herbs into neat, even loads, or prep tongs to keep your fingers clean while packing and emptying.

Everything runs from the single button built into the mouthpiece, guided by the four petal lights. A full session looks like this:

1. Loading: Pull the bottom oven lid straight off using the side notches. The funnel-shaped opening guides ground herbs into the oven; fill it and tamp lightly, keeping the load breathable. The half-pack lid handles smaller loads.
2. Powering on: Hold the button in the mouthpiece for two seconds. The vape vibrates, the petals show the battery level, and heating starts.
3. Choosing a preset: Click the button to cycle through the four petals. The second or third petal is a good starting point.
4. Heating: Wait roughly a minute. The vape vibrates again when the oven reaches temperature.
5. Inhaling: Take slow, steady draws. Back-to-back draws work well, and the lip sensor keeps the heat active while you use it.
6. Finishing: After about 30 seconds without motion, the petals turn blue and the vape enters standby, then shuts off fully around the one-minute mark. Pick it up to resume, or let it cool and brush out the oven while the metal is still slightly warm.

The 2800 mAh battery is sealed inside and runs up to 50 minutes per charge, around four to five sessions. Charging happens over a side-mounted USB-C port.

That port is a bigger deal than it sounds. Earlier PAX models used a proprietary magnetic charger that was easy to lose; the PAX 4 charges from any USB-C cable and adapter, much like a phone. A full charge takes roughly 70 to 100 minutes.

The box includes a braided USB-C cable but no wall adapter. You can add a fast charger so the vape always charges at full speed from the wall.

The vapour path is narrow, so it rewards regular attention; even a little residue makes the draw noticeably tighter. The habit that works best is brushing out the oven and lid after sessions while the metal is still slightly warm, before residue sets.

Every week or two, push out the oven screen with the included wire brush, soak the screen in isopropyl alcohol, and run the brush through the vapour path. The silicone mouthpiece attracts lint in a pocket; a damp cloth wipes it clean.

The box covers the routine with a wire brush, three oven screens and a keychain multi-tool with a hidden scraper. A 3D screen set (sold separately) adds three more screens and a spare brush for when the flavour starts to dull.

The PAX Flow is the airflow-focused hybrid that sits above the PAX 4 in PAX's range. It moves far more air through an open path, 10 L/min against the PAX 4's 2.5 L/min. It also heats in roughly half the time and adds a fifth mode for water pipe use.

The PAX 4 answers with about 40% more runtime per charge, up to 50 minutes against the Flow's 35 or so. It also stays more comfortable in the hand, weighs about 10 g less, and costs less, while the vapour quality between the two is practically identical.

If wide airflow or water pipe sessions come first, the Flow earns its higher price. For a full day away from a charger, the PAX 4 is the easier vape to live with.

The PAX Mini 2 is the smallest and most affordable PAX, a conduction vape that heats in around 22 seconds and runs about an hour per charge.

The PAX 4 brings hybrid heating the Mini 2 lacks. Extraction is more even, the flavour holds deeper into the session, and the airflow is smoother. It also charges over standard USB-C, while the Mini 2 still uses PAX's proprietary magnetic charger.

The Mini 2 makes sense as a first vape on a tight budget; once flavour and extraction quality start to matter, the PAX 4 earns its place.
