The PAX 4 is the biggest upgrade to PAX's core line in years. For nearly two decades, the brand's slim aluminium portables have shaped what a pocket vaporizer looks like. It suits owners of earlier PAX models who are ready to upgrade. It also suits anyone who wants something discreet and good-looking to carry every day, and anyone switching from smoking who wants one simple button and no learning curve.

The PAX 4 puts simplicity ahead of precision. You get four presets and no app. It heats in roughly a minute, so it suits planned sessions better than quick, one-off draws. Everyday carry is what it does best. It lies flat in a jeans pocket, looks like a small gadget, and runs a quiet, flavourful session anywhere.

The PAX 4 keeps the shape that made PAX famous: a slim block of matte anodised aluminium, 10.8 cm tall and 125 g. The flat mouthpiece sits flush with the top, so there is little to catch on fabric when you slide it into a pocket.

A raised mouthpiece also comes in the box for a more natural lip feel during longer sessions. Both are removable for cleaning; the flat one lifts out with the multi-tool.

The shell warms noticeably near the oven during longer high-heat sessions. If the surface gets too warm, the vape shuts down briefly and resumes once it cools.

A silicone cover (sold separately) adds grip and drop protection, and keeps the shell comfortable to hold when it warms.

Every earlier PAX apart from the Flow heated by conduction alone, with hot chamber walls baking the herbs. The PAX 4 adds convection on top. Hot air enters through redesigned gaps around the oven lid and flows through the load. At the same time, the steel walls heat the herbs directly. It is like cooking with an oven and a pan at once.

The result is noticeably more even extraction. In our testing, used herbs came out evenly brown with far fewer green spots, and the flavour held deeper into the session. By PAX's own measurements, the new heater pulls up to 50% more vapour from each load than any earlier PAX.

The airflow is also much improved. You no longer need the forced slow-draw technique of older PAX models; draws flow freely and back-to-back inhalations work well. It is still restricted on purpose, so slow, steady draws give the best results.

The PAX 4 runs on four presets: 190 °C, 200 °C, 210 °C and 220 °C, shown by the colour of the four petal-shaped lights on the front. One click of the button in the mouthpiece cycles through them. A vibration tells you when the oven is ready, roughly a minute after you switch on.

The lower presets preserve lighter compounds and terpenes, while the higher ones extract more material in fewer draws. Many owners start on the second or third petal and step up as the flavour fades.

There is no app and no Bluetooth; PAX removed them on purpose. Sensors do the work instead. The vape can tell when your lips are on the mouthpiece and when it is moving, so it keeps heat active while you draw and pauses when you put it down. The vibrations also mean you can use it without looking.

The stainless steel oven sits at the bottom and holds up to 0.3 g of ground herbs. The funnel-shaped opening guides herbs straight in. You pull the lid off using the two side notches, and it comes away far more easily than on earlier models.

The hybrid heater works best with a light touch. Fill the oven and tamp gently, keeping the load loose enough for air to pass through. A half-pack lid is available separately for smaller loads.

The PAX 4 works with dry herbs only. There is no concentrate insert for it, and dosing capsules do not fit.

A puck press shapes ground herbs into neat, even loads. Prep tongs keep your fingers clean while you pack and empty the oven.

Everything runs from the single button built into the mouthpiece. The four petal lights show you what is happening. A full session looks like this:

1. Loading: Pull the bottom oven lid straight off using the side notches. The funnel-shaped opening guides ground herbs straight into the oven. Fill it and tamp lightly, so air can still pass through. The half-pack lid handles smaller loads.
2. Powering on: Hold the button in the mouthpiece for two seconds. The vape vibrates, the petals show the battery level, and heating starts.
3. Choosing a preset: Click the button to cycle through the four petals. Start on the second or third.
4. Heating: Wait roughly a minute. The vape vibrates again when the oven reaches temperature.
5. Inhaling: Take slow, steady pulls. Back-to-back draws work well. The lip sensor keeps the heat on while you use it.
6. Finishing: After about 30 seconds without motion, the petals turn blue and the vape enters standby. It shuts off fully at around a minute of inactivity. Pick it up during standby to carry on, or let it cool and brush out the oven while the metal is still slightly warm.

The 2800 mAh battery is sealed inside and runs up to 50 minutes per charge; in our testing that came to around four to five sessions. You charge it through a USB-C port on the side.

That port is a bigger deal than it sounds. Earlier PAX models used a proprietary magnetic charger that was easy to lose; the PAX 4 charges from a standard USB-C cable and a certified 5 to 9 V adapter rated at 2.5 A or more, much like a phone. A full charge takes roughly 90 minutes.

The box includes a braided USB-C cable but no wall adapter. Add a fast charger and it will refill at full speed from the wall.

The vapour path is narrow, so clean it often to keep the draw free. The best habit is to brush out the oven and lid after each session, while the metal is still slightly warm and before residue sets.

Every week or two, push the oven screen out with the included wire brush and soak it in isopropyl alcohol. Then run the brush through the vapour path. The silicone mouthpiece attracts lint in a pocket; a damp cloth wipes it clean.

The tools for this routine come in the box: a wire brush, three oven screens and a keychain multi-tool with a hidden scraper. A 3D screen set (sold separately) adds three more screens and a spare brush for when the flavour starts to fade.

The PAX Flow is the flavour-focused flagship alongside the PAX 4, and it is built around airflow. It moves far more air through an open path: 10 L/min against the PAX 4's 2.5 L/min. It also heats faster, in about 45 seconds against the PAX 4's 55 to 70 and adds a fifth mode for water pipe use.

The PAX 4 gives you more runtime per charge: up to 50 minutes against the Flow's 35 or so. It also stays more comfortable in the hand, weighs about 10 g less and costs less. In our testing, vapour quality between the two was practically identical.

If wide airflow or water pipe sessions come first, the Flow earns its higher price. For a full day away from a charger, the PAX 4 is the easier vape to live with.

The PAX Mini 2 is the smallest and most affordable PAX. It is a conduction vape that heats in around 22 seconds and runs for over two hours per charge.

The PAX 4 adds hybrid heating, which the Mini 2 does not have. In our testing, extraction was more even, the flavour held deeper into the session, and the airflow was smoother. It also charges over standard USB-C, while the Mini 2 still uses PAX's proprietary magnetic charger.

The Mini 2 makes sense as a first vape on a tight budget. Once flavour and extraction start to matter, the PAX 4 earns its place.

The Veazy is a pocket session vape from Storz & Bickel, the German makers of the Volcano. It costs about the same as the PAX 4. It also uses hybrid heating, and its plastic shell stays cool in the hand. It takes dosing capsules too, so you can load sessions in advance.
