Quartz balls form the thermal matrix inside the Tempest cap, taking the place of the standard zirconia. Around 50 pieces at 3 mm come in the set.
At 1.4 g, this is the lightest cap fill of any material available for the Tempest, so warm-up is the quickest of the range. Quartz also lets go of its heat readily, which gives short, punchy extraction with clean flavour and less heat held between draws.
If your sessions are short and you value a quick turnaround over long heat retention, quartz balls are the set to reach for.

The quartz balls surprised me (as did the ruby balls), as there's a noticeable difference compared to the original zircon balls. Quartz heats up significantly faster, resulting in a much thicker cloud right from the first puff. The vapor density afterward is also outstanding. The flavor is already extremely good with the Tempest (compared to a Dynavap M7 or Hyperdyn without gemstones), and I didn't notice much difference with the zircon balls in that regard. Quartz heats up much faster, so don't heat it too far past the second click, otherwise it will start to burn easily.
